Go see it. Amazing story. Amazing animation. Takes incredibly heavy subject matter and makes it intimate and accessible…no hitting over the head. So little in mainstream culture in the US seems to just tell the small stories about what is happening/has happened in Iran. This was a refreshing change, and a fun, fun movie.

Sun is shining, and I’m going to eat pancakes now.

Back from Vietnam, and good lord jet lag is kicking my ass. People, naturally, are quite interested in hearing about the trip, and I’m going to have a whole section on the trip soon. To be honest, though, I’m just not really sure about how I feel about the trip. Frankly, it was hard, and while there were amazing moments, and certainly times where I had a great time, I got extremely burnt out at about week two. Just being in such an alien landscape had all my senses on overdrive, and I was overwhelmed and overstimulated much of the time. Part of the problem was that we spent a lot of time in the cities, which were quite claustrophobic, and not enough time in the quieter and more out of the way provinces (especially in Hoi An at the beach…still dreaming about being there).

Anyway, last night I went out with Aurora, Emily, and Heather for dinner and a movie. Emily asked if it was weirder to be there (i.e. Vietnam) or weirder coming back. Emily has a way of asking or saying the perfect thing at times, and this really made me think. I have felt totally out of it (even accounting for jet lag) since I got back, and this question made me realize that I don’t feel like I’m part of either world. It’s almost as if I feel as much of a stranger back in my beloved Oaktown as I did in Ho Chi Minh city. Strange.

At any rate, we went out to see Waitress at the Peidmont, and it was hilarious. Keri Russell was surprisingly good, as was an old and bloated Andy Griffith and Nathan Fillion (a happy surprise as I thought he might be typecast in Slither and Firefly type roles). Despite a rather hit you over the head happy ending, it was quite the fun movie. Favorite moment: After seeing Keri Russell’s character’s lipstick smudged from an illicit kiss, hearing Andy Griffith say “Now I’m going to go inside while you wipe off that indiscretion on your face.”
